The Community Literacy Council (CLC) trains tutors who work with at-risk readers in elementary schools.CLC provides tutor training resources, a data-base of national organizations, and connections for related community partners. The CLC works with other groups in the community to promote literacy. For news story, see "Keep Kids Reading" story and video footage.
It focuses on these literacy principles: 1) Tutors can make a difference in the life of an individual child. 2) Tutors can support student reading at four levels: reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading. Our goal is to get the child to the independent reading level. 3) Reading and writing are connected. Writing has similar levels of support. 4) Active learning is fun and effective.
Time for Literacy Newsletters
The CLC sponsors monthly newsletters with articles for parents, teachers, and tutors on literacy related issues and news. For a service learning project, BYUI education students write the articles based on their research.
